I like to try to imitate lace and embroidery: I find the delicacy, transparency and sheen exquisite.
Lace and embroidery, like jewellery, are techniques of ornamentation.
Both are embellishments. Neither is necessary. But where they appear, they are noticed, admired and, perhaps, envied. Like jewellery.
I imagine them, the embroiderers and seamstresses, for hundreds of years, in the silence of convents or confined to their homes, invisible and subdued, but never ceasing to create new designs and invent new techniques.
Masterpieces of ephemeral art by artists who received no recognition. But this craft sometimes made these women happy and gave meaning to their lives.
